I was compelled to begin seeking at likely replacements for the stock Bridgestone Potenza RE040 (225/forty five/eighteen) somewhat right after hitting twenty five,000 miles on them. I was tough pressed by financial reasons to find the least expensive probable tires that would offer a similar or greater tread existence (increased was much better) and a first rate level of performance on dry surfaces, as effectively as moist. I eradicated a number of candidates prior to settling for the Sumitomo HTRs, particularly:

  • Fuzion ZRi: Funky hunting tread pattern. In other phrases, all-display-no-go.

  • Yokohama AVS ES100: Quite decent reviews all round, but...heck! ended up around budget!

  • Dunlop SP Activity FM901: Had blended emotions about these, and some pointed to another flavor of Fuzion 'philosophy.'

  • Nitto NT555: These tires acquired great critiques general from the quarter mile crowd, which didn't really say a lot about the tire potential to flip...so, discarded.

  • Sumitomo HTR Z II: Out of stock!

So soon after a transient dialogue with a TireRack sales man, he advised the Sumitomo HTR+. 1st I was hesitant to go for an all-year tire. I thought to myself "All seasons on the eight? No way! But gradually I recognized that I didn't have much of a selection in the price tag range I was buying in. And so I ended up shelling out my credit card to obtain a set of four Sumitomo HTR+ in 245/forty/eighteen. The rolling stock stops up becoming one thing near to
one% larger than the stock Potenzas. In other words, no massive offer.

My very first impressions

I received the tires mounted and the suspension checked and aligned at Christensen Tire, right here in Richardson. In all, the entire install took the a few hrs. I quickly jumped again in the vehicle and drove off. The 1st thing I seen was the motor and exhaust be aware -I am operating on a fully stock Mazda RX8. And I could actually value the motor reving up and down more than the tire noise. Permit me consider that again: What tire noise? So, the 1st impression was a great one particular.

Nonetheless, pleasure only lasted a single corner. The initial time I had to flip, I noticed a great mushiness(sp) on the steering. On my way home, I stored praying for the tire strain to be really low, therefore providing that delicate feeling. Well, tire stress was not it, I checked all four cornerns and all 4 had been pinned @ 39psi. The tires have been really over-inflated from encouraged strain. The liable was naturally a really comfortable and tall sidewall. There is a superimposed photograph of the Sumitomos and the Potenzas below. You can see that equally tires have related "total" peak when mounted even so, the Potenzas had a marginally rounded sidewall, and a considerably much better lip to defend the wheels. On the other hand, the Sumitomos have a straighter(sp) sidewall, which apparently robs it from stifness.

I will attempt and rotate these tires every 5,000 miles. Explanation being, on the last Potenza rotation, the tires that expended the last 7,five hundred miles on the rear ended up badly worn out (evenly worn even though).
